MDCC Wins Two High-Octane Clashes with Coahoma
5/16/13
CLARKSDALE – Mississippi Delta won two high-octane clashes with competitive Coahoma Community College teams here Monday with the Lady Trojans on top 68-64, and MDCC men defeating CCC 88-84.
Although the Coahoma Tigers outscored Mississippi Delta 22 points in the second half (58-36), they failed to recover from a slow start with MDCC sharpshooters zinging eight three-point baskets and a 52-26 lead at halftime.
Leading the scoring for the Trojans with 31 points, Anthony McDonald hit four triples in the first half with Marquarius Boddie contributing three and Jumelle Hall adding one.
In the second half CCC’s Patrick Brown ignited with 31 points, aided by four treys from teammate Stanley Haywood, another from Stacy Regular plus wild and wooly hand-to-hand combat on the floor and in the air.
With 44 seconds remaining, Patrick Brown scored a basket to elevate CCC three points behind MDCC (79-76); with 32 seconds left, Regular’s triple maintained the same status (83-80); with 6 seconds on the clock, Rigueson Desorvil added two points (86-84), but Trojan McDonald would not go away.
Leading the scoring for the Tigers was Brown with 31 points; Haywood with 16; Alex Thompson, 11; Rigueson Desorvil, 7; Stacy Regular, 5; Darcee Carson, Jonathan Ankston, and Alan Morris, 4 each; and Tavin Askew, 2.
Top scorers for Mississippi Delta Trojans were McDonald with 31 points; Boddie, 18; Hall and Keymond Crawford, 8 each; Nathaniel Watkins and Andre Armstrong, 6 each; James Evans and Johnny Rucker, 4 each; Junearick, 2; and Marcus Springer, 1.
Coahoma’s slow fuse opening was established in the first game with the Lady Trojans jumping out front fast and leading as much as 16 points (28-12) and 30-22 at halftime.
However, the tempo picked up after intermission with points by Bridgette Griffin and a crisp pass from Azande Collier to Jasmine Brown for a motivational basket (49-43).
With 3.43 minutes remaining, Griffin scored to tie at 57, and Shanarika McCullum hit for MDCC. The lead see-sawed via turnovers; Lady Trojan Cedrica Cooper scored a three-pointer (65-64); and time ran out.
Leading the scoring for Coahoma in the women’s game was Breanna Wiley with 21 points; Bridgette Griffin with 20; Jasmine Brown, 9; Antoine Mayfield, 6; Azanda Collier and Raven Whipps, 4 each.
Scoring for the Lady Trojans were McCullum with 20 points; Suzette Suggs with 10; Cedrica Cooper and Krystal Nailer, 9 each; Myiesha Stewart and Z’Hara Williams, 7 each; Ashanti Spencer, 4; and Shuntequa Lofton, 2.
