Coahoma Enjoys 3-0 Perfect Record Following Wins over East Mississippi

5/16/13

CLARKSDALE - The Tigers and Lady Tigers of Coahoma Community College are enjoying a perfect 3.0 record following Thursday night’s convincing rock ‘ roll-style wins over East Central Community College.

Ahead at halftime 40-22, CCC’s Lady Tigers won 75-60 over ECCC’s Lady Warriors, and Coahoma’s Tigers won 76-62 after leading 41-20 at the intermission.

Thursday’s victories opened the home basketball season for Coahoma after winning on the road over East Central and Hinds Utica.

The Lady Tigers beat ECCC in overtime 83-78 Nov. 1, and Coahoma’s men won 76-62. On Nov. 7 the CCC women defeated Hinds in Utica 70-54, and the men won 68-65.

Elated over the Lady Tigers take-charge attitude evidenced by Erica Collins fouling out; Ciara Morgan playing with four fouls, and Tayla Tillis with three, Head Coach LaCole Brooks agreed after the game, "They were really aggressive."

Early in the first half, the teams appeared evenly matched with ties at 8 points, 10, 14, and 20.

However, a pair of triples by Jasmine Goss ratcheted up the pace followed by five consecutive points by ShaRonda Vaughn and additional unanswered swishes from Morgan and Goss sent CCC soaring ahead 18 points at halftime.

The returning ECCC’s Lady Warriors outscored CCC briefly until Kayla Tillis hit a three-pointer, and Morgan morphed into a rebounding, blocking, stealing, scoring machine infecting her teammates Erica Collins, ShyVuna Johnson, and Alexandria Williams to join the romp.

A crisp pass from Johnson to Williams for two points put CCC up 64-47 with four minutes remaining, and Coahoma’s offense continued with more points by Goss.

Leading Thursday’s scoring for CCC’s women were Jasmine with 20 points; ShaRhonda Vaughn with 15; Ciara Morgan with 12; Erica Collins, 11; Monique-Dayana McGee, 10; ShyVuna Johnson, 6; Alex Williams, 5; Shakyla Jones and Kayla Tillis, 3 each.

Top scorers for the Lady Warriors were Inessa Adams with 15 points; Kurlysha Bell and Ja’Monica Orion with 12 each.

Continuing the evening’s fast-paced assault, the Tigers hit the hardwood with tall man Stephen Johnson zipping a pass to Cordaryl Campbell for a basket, and a rebound and points by Cortavious Vaughn jumped CCC out front 8-2 three minutes into the game.

A steal and dunk by Alex Thompson were followed by two more points by Charles Nash to move the Tigers ahead 12-2.

However, while they remained stuck on a dozen, the Warriors were creeping into the scoring column until Ferguson Desoroul nailed a triple, and the score became 15-9, then 21-11, then 29-12 thanks to an offensive barrage by Rashard Harris.

With six minutes remaining in the half, the Tigers were ahead 35-13, and at halftime the score was 41-20.

The second half showcased Coahoma’s depth as a high-scoring offense and awesome defense. With three minutes remaining, Stacey Regular threw up a triple from half court country for a 75-54 lead.

After the game Tiger Men’s Coach Ira Peterson said he was "Happy with the win."

CCC’s Rashard Harris of led the scoring for Coahoma with 20 points followed by Cordaryl Campbell with 16; Cortavious Vaughn with 12; Stacey Regular, 12; Alex Thompson, 6; Ferguson Desoroul, 5; Morris Adams, Kenny Harris, Stephen Johnson, and Ramone Wesley, 2 each.

Leading ECCC’s scoring were Lavadius Lyles with 19 points followed by Tejiminion Leatherwood with 13; and Nafa Maringng with 8.

CCC’s teams travel next to Southern University for a tournament Friday and Saturday. They play Co-Lin in Wesson Monday; Meridian on the road Saturday, Nov. 10; and Itawamba Thursday, Dec. 1, on the road. The next home game is Monday, Dec. 5, with Mississippi Delta.
