CCC Drops Second Game to Top-Ranked Opponent

7/18/14

Coahoma Community College ran into another high-powered offense Thursday night during its home opener at James E. Miller Stadium and dropped its second game of the season to No. 10 Hinds Community College, 55-20.

Much-improved over their Week 1 performance at top-ranked Gulf Coast Community college, the Tigers still struggled to get their offense started early against HCC. Coahoma was only able to pick up one first down in the first quarter, during six possessions, forcing its defense to stay on the field the majority of the opening 15 minutes. That extended defensive duty would be felt by the Tigers later in the ballgame.

“We played a lot better than we did last week, but we also missed a lot of opportunities early,” said CCC Head Football Coach Freeman Horton. “This team was ranked No. 10 in the nation, so not only are we improving; we are improving against some really good football teams”

CCC had an opportunity early to take the lead after a 3-and-out on their second possession. Punter Cody Spears’ kick grazed the Hinds return man and the Tigers recovered the ball and took over on the Eagles’ 25-yard line with the score knotted as zero. But on third down, quarterback Quaintavous Peterson’s pass was intercepted halting the Tigers early momentum.

From there, HCC quarterback James Summers took control scoring on a 6-yard run, and passing for another (24 yards) to get the Eagles out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead. Hinds’ offense continued to put up points in the second stanza with running back Gregory Foster scoring on a 2-yard run, and Summers connecting on his second touchdown pass, this one a 48-yarder to put HCC ahead, 28-0.

The Tigers got a spark late in the second quarter when CCC quarterback Rodrick McKee connected on an 85-yard pass to his wide receiver Anthony Williams who made an excellent run after the catch taking the ball to the HCC 1-yard line. After failing to punch the ball into the end zone on his first three attempts, McKee finally bullied his way across the goal line on fourth down to put the Tigers on the board, 28-7.

However Hinds would strike back quickly putting together a 62-yard drive in less than two minutes ending with another scoring run from Summers of 14-yards just four plays later. The HCC QB finished the night with 250 yards in the air, and 53 yards on the ground.

“We played hard, but we missed a lot of tackles, and a lot of that was from fatigue,” said Horton. “Early in the game we didn’t do well offensively and that kept our defense on the field and we wore down. And that’s what happens when you wear down, you start missing tackles and arm tackling. So we’ve got to get our offense going earlier, if our offense would’ve played the first half like they did in the second half, this could’ve been a whole different ballgame.”

The Tigers fumbled on their opening possession of the second half after a personal foul penalty had already hemmed them up inside their own 20-yard line. Hinds second-string quarterback Diantae Thomas took advantage quickly scoring on a 15-yard run for third quarter’s only score to extend the Eagles lead, 41-7.

CCC’s offense finally began to show life in the second half on the strength of McKee’s arm and the legs of running backs Christian Williams and Tiberas Lampkin. The Tigers moved the ball well in the third quarter only to have a fumble and an interception halt promising drives. Coahoma finally put it all together early in the fourth quarter with McKee leading a well-executed drive that ended with a 4-yard scoring pass to Damico Ewing.

Hinds would add two more scores in the fourth, another run by Thomas of 25-yards and a 16-yard run by RB Tommy McCalpin. And, after CCC’s McKee was put out with an injury, Tigers freshman quarterback Anthony Mitchell, Jr. gave the home crowd something to cheer about completing his first two passes for 40 and 10 yards, and then running the ball twice and picking up nine total yards and a score. That spark, however, came a little too late.

“These are non-divisional games, they don’t count in our division, and our goal is to make the playoffs out of the north division,” Horton said. “So our motivation is to get better by playing really good competition in preparation of playing our best football during league play.”

Coahoma (0-2) will be back at home next week on Thursday night hosting its first MACJC North Division opponent Northwest at 6:30 p.m.

The Rangers (0-2) are coming off 48-24 loss to No. 6 Copiah-Lincoln.

“We started off with some really high-level teams that have some really good athletes and a lot of depth on their rosters,” Horton said. “When they bring in their second and third athletes (on the depth chart) it’s like their still playing their first string guys, and it’s not like that for us.

“We are just trying to keep our kids encouraged, keep their heads in these ballgames early on, and I was proud of them again, they didn’t quit last week and they didn’t quit tonight,” said Horton. “We’re like a big puzzle right now and we’re just trying to put all of the pieces together right now, get everyone in their correct spots, and I think we’re getting closer.”
