CCC Drops Pair of Games at Home to Jones Junior College
CLARKSDALE — Coahoma Community College’s basketball teams were unable to pickup their second wins of the season on Monday evening as visiting Jones County Junior College defeated CCC in both the women’s and men’s ball games.
On The men’s side, Coahoma (1-5) trailed by six points, 31-26, with 7:46 remaining in the first half before a bizarre turn of events changed the momentum of the game. With both teams running the floor and scoring in transition and playing aggressively, the Tigers bench was hit with a technical foul after a disputed call with the referees. The tech, followed by another foul, followed by a second technical on the Tigers bench, sparked an 8-1 run by the Bobcats that included six made free throws.
Jones would extend that lead to 50-34 at the half; and build on that lead in the second half for the eventual 93-65 victory over the Tigers. The Bobcats also missed 17 foul shots in the second half.
The Tigers were led in scoring by sophomore Billy Jackson with 20 points with sophomores Darcee Carson adding 12, and Xavier Graves 10, in the losing effort.
Men's Basketball Scores
Coahoma: Carter 5, Allen 7, Brown 7, Jones 2, Carson 12, Jackson 20, Dorsey 2, Graves 10.
The Lady Bobcats jumped out to an early 15-3 advantage as the Lady Tigers struggled with turnovers in the early going. Coahoma also had some trouble matching up in the post throughout the evening with Jones commanding the glass for the duration.
Freshman Ariel Jones led the Lady Tigers with 11 points off the bench with freshmen Shontrell Williams adding nine, and Josten Totten and Ashley Smith each chipping in eight.
Coahoma (1-4) settled down and played a much better second half keeping pace with the Lady Bobcats 32-29 in the final period, but could not overcome the early deficit falling, 73-49.
Women's Basketball Scores
Coahoma: Totten 8, Pearson 4, Smith 8, Jones 11, Johnson 5, Williams 9, Mayfield 4.
Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers will be back on the hardwood this Thursday evening as Coahoma plays host to Northwest Community College. It will be the MACJC North Division opener for both squads and Tiger fans are asked to wear black shirts in support of the “Black Out” scheduled by the athletic Department. The first 75 fans entering the Pinnacle for the game will receive a free T-shirt.
Tip-off for the women’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m., with the men to follow at 8 p.m.
