Search Committee Narrowing Down Applicant Pool for Football Coach
CLARKSDALE — Members of Coahoma Community College’s search committee tasked with hiring CCC’s next football coach spent the majority of Thursday morning sifting through 30-plus applications from those interested in being the next to lead the Tigers program.
Earlier in December, Coahoma President Dr. Valmadge Towner announced that former Mississippi Valley State Coach Charles K. Barron, Sr., would lead the search committee after Coach Freeman Horton announced the he would be retiring from the position Dec. 31st.
Barron is currently serving as Conservator for the Sunflower County School District but has strong ties to Coahoma that include serving as football coach at Coahoma Agricultural High School and also doubling as coach at Coahoma Junior College when it reinstituted the football program in 1975. He completed his student teaching at Aggie in 1969 and served as football coach from 1970-76 – he was also the boys and girls track coach.
Also selected to serve on the search committee were Clarksdale Mayor and Attorney Bill Luckett, County Supervisor Timothy Burrel, Vice President of Coahoma Community College’s Alumni Association and Coahoma County Athletic Director Robert Giles, Assistant Athletic Director and Trainer at CCC Selina Reid, and Coahoma Math Instructor Luke Howard.
The committee has narrowed the group of applicants, and will be extending invitations for interviews as early as next week. A new coach is expected to be announced before the end of January.
“We want to hire a consummate communicator with a deep character who can come here to Coahoma and create a sense of team,” Towner told the committee. “We are looking for an educated leader of young men that has a record of consistency, a positive outlook and a drive to help our program succeed.”
With National College Football Signing Day scheduled for February 5, the committee will be putting in some long hours to ensure that a thorough search and evaluation of applicants is completed expeditiously.
The committee will communicate electronically in the coming days as each individual member will personally grade each remaining applicant on an agreed upon group of metrics. Those cumulative scores will be used to determine those invited to continue with the interview process.
