Tigers Return to Action This Week at the Pinnacle
CLARKSDALE — The Coahoma Community College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will return to the hard court this week after a month-long hiatus for the holiday break. The Tigers will host two non-conference opponents, Southern University on Thursday night and Baton Rouge Community College on Saturday afternoon.
These two non-conference games will be the final ones of the season as the Tigers and Lady Tigers will fill out the rest of their regular-season schedules against MACJC North Division opponents beginning Jan. 13 at Holmes Community College.
Both the CCC men and women returned to practice last week, and besides a little rust, both coaches said they were happy with how their teams looked after the long holiday rest.
“Everybody came back in pretty good shape, and were enthusiastic and ready to work,” said Tigers Head Coach Ira Peterson. “I thought that at the end of the semester, we were finally finding ourselves and beginning to play good basketball. In a way, it’s like starting over again.
“We’re going to continue to try and do the same things we did during the first part of the season. I had a chance to reflect during the break, and I thought that the games we lost in the first half, we could’ve have won all of them but one or two. This week, we’ve got two tough opponents coming in from Louisiana and it’s important for us to pick up a couple of wins and gain some momentum as we head into conference play.”
Peterson says his team will need to up its aggressiveness on the defensive side of the ball moving forward and to limit turnovers and convert a higher percentage of free throws to be successful. Currently, the Tigers are 2-8 overall and 0-2 in the MACJC North Division.
The Lady Tigers have also been back in the gym trying to knock off the cobwebs while trying to get back into the routine of school and basketball. Head Coach LaCole Brooks believes that the first part of the season opened her young team’s eyes to the speed of the college game. She says that she believes her Lady Tigers will be more relaxed now that they’ve got some experience behind them.
“We’re trying get our shots back and to get our conditioning back right now,” said Brooks. “We’re working to get our timing back and really just getting back into the swing of things, school and basketball, just getting into our routine.
“We had a tough first half of the season, and we want to come back really strong to start the second half and we’re going to have to get focused and disciplined if we want to do that.”
Brooks said that looking back at the first half of the season her team will need to up the ante on the defensive side of the ball and cut down on the turnovers that hurt the Lady Tigers early this season.
“We really need to tighten up, and quit shooting ourselves in the foot with all the careless turnovers,” Brooks said. “We’ve got to take better care of the ball and be more disciplined and rebound the ball a lot better. We beat Southern early this season and they are going to be looking to return the favor on Thursday. We want to set the tone for the second half this week playing good basketball.”
Tip-off for Thursday night’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m., for the Lady Tigers with the men to tip-off around 8 p.m. On Saturday, the women tip-off at 1 p.m. and the Tigers are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
Thursday night’s game will also feature a special half-court shooting contest sponsored by the athletic department. Fans who wish to participate can sign-up when they enter the Pinnacle for a chance to participate and win a Walmart gift certificate. A free throw shooting contest will be held Saturday giving fans another chance to be part of the action.
