Tigers Pull to .500 in Conference with Homecoming Win
CLARKSDALE — The Coahoma Community College men’s basketball celebrated Homecoming winning their second consecutive MACJC North Conference game Saturday afternoon over rival Mississippi Delta. Freshman and Clarksdale native Trey Allen put together his best performance of the season dropping 23 points on the Trojans to lead the Tigers at the Pinnacle.
Allen came of the bench and accounted for the majority of the 37 bench points tallied by the Tigers whose bench outscored Mississippi Delta 37-15.
“Our guys are beginning to come together,” said Head Coach Ira Peterson. “We’re starting to believe in each other and becoming more confident with each game.”
Coahoma sophomore Darcee Carson, who was also crowned 2014 Mr. Basketball, added 13 points for the Tigers and Billy Jackson, contributed 10.
The Tigers (2-2 in MACJC and 4-10 overall) will hit the road Tuesday afternoon traveling to Booneville to face Northeast Mississippi Community. NEMCC (0-3 MACJC and 3-11 overall) is coming off a conference loss to East Mississippi last week.
The Lady Tigers fell to MS Delta in the early game on Homecoming Saturday afternoon despite two solid scoring efforts from freshmen Ariel Jones and Gabrielle Gilbert who scored 18 and 17 points respectively. Coahoma hung tough throughout the first half and went into the locker room tied with the Lady Trojans at 29 a piece.
However, MS Delta was able to pull away late and put the Lady Tigers (0-4 in MACJC and 1-11 overall) away and pickup the conference win. CCC’s women will try and get on the winning track Tuesday evening in Booneville but The Lady Tigers of Northeast MS Community College (2-1 in MACJC 7-6 overall) look to be a tough conference opponent.
Tipoff of the women’s game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., with the men to follow at 11:30.
