Tigers Suffer a Disappointing Loss!

4/18/14

FULTON – Freshman Tyler Jackson’s 17-yard field goal at the buzzer brought the Itawamba Community College Indians back from a two-touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter to stun the Coahoma Community College Tigers, 31-28.

The win pushed ICC’s overall record to 4-3 and 2-2 in the MACJC North Division. CCC fell to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the MACIC North.

Courtney Gladney provided most of the heroics for the victorious Indians picking up 165 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns. This was Gladney’s return to action after missing three games because of a broken collarbone he sustained against Mississippi Delta.

The loss spoiled individual performances by CCC sophomore running back Daveonn Porter who gained 213 yards rushing and scored a touchdown and wide receiver Tyshun Alston who scored two touchdowns.

When Alston scored on an 88-yard touchown pass from quarterback Quantavious Peterson with 1:35 left in the third quarter the homestanding ICC fans groaned sensing their team was headed for their fourth straight loss.

The Indians were not to be denied.

Indian quarterback Griff Loftis fought off the CCC’s defensive pressure and provided the steady hand for ICC’s 17-point fourth quarter comeback.

After CCC and ICC fought to a 14-all standoff at halftime the offense fireworks picked up dramatically in the second half.

CCC seemingly had seized the momentum in the early minutes of the third period.

Peterson, who overshot receivers most of the time, drove the Tigers to their third touchdown hitting Delvin Divinity with a 14-yard scoring pass with 4:20 in the third period. O’Hara extended CCC’s lead to 21-14.

CCC appeared to the game well under control when Peterson hit Alston for his 88-yard bomb. O’Hara gave the Tigers a 28-14 lead.

Loftis mixed his plays well handing off primarily to Gladney and finding wide receivers open.

Loftis hit wide receiver Rashad Pargo with a 20-yard scoring pass with 9:12 to play. Jackson narrowed the score to 28-21 in CCC’s favor.

CCC’s defensive began to wilt from the punishing runs by Gladney made possible by the Itawamba front line.

Gladney scored ICC’s fourth touchdown from two yards out with 5:09 left. Jackson knotted the score at 28-all.

CCC tried to get O’Hara in reasonable field goal range. O’Hara was finally forced to try a 46-yard field goal with 1:48 left in regulation but the kick went awry.

ICC came alive and marched back down field to win it wth Jackson’s clinching field goal.

The Tigers took a 7-0 lead on one-yard run by Peterson and the conversion by O’Hara with 11:39 remaining in the opening period.

The Indians capped a 77-yard drive when Loftis hit wide receiver Sanford Seay for an 18-yard scoring catch on the first play of the second quarter. Tyler Jackson’s conversion
knotted the score at 7-all.

CCC had another potential scoring drive in progress but the march stalled forcing the Tigers to punt to the Itawamba 13.

Likewise, Itawamba had a scoring drive in hand before the CCC defense’s jarring tackles forced Loftis to cough up the ball that was recovered by the Tigers at their 32.

After CCC failed to make a sustain drive Itawamba began a drive at its 25 and marched 75 yards for a go-ahead touchdown with 4:17 left in the half. Gladney capped the drive with a 14-yard touchdown. Jackson’s conversion put the Indians ahead, 14-7.

CCC refused to roll over dead.

With Peterson and Porter sharing the running plays, the Tigers marched to the Itawamba three.

On second and goal from the ICC four, Peterson hit Alston in the left corner of the end zone for the touchdown with 1:26 in the half.

O’Hara missed the conversion on his first try but an offside penalty against ICC gave him a second chance. He connected to knot the score at 14-all.

Porter made the touchdown possible when he hauled in a 53-yard pass from Peterson from the CCC 28 and brought the ball down to the Itawamba 19.

CCC regained the lead when Peterson hit wide receiver Delvin Divinity for a 14-yard touchdown with 4:20 left in the third period. O’Hara’s conversion put CCC back on top, 21-14.

The biggest play of the game was Peterson’s 88-yard scoring pass to Alston.
Gladney’s two-yard burst with 5:09 and Jackson’s conversion tied the game again at 28-all.

After O’Hara’s missed field goal try the Indians turned defeat into victory with Jackson’s field goal.
