Lady Bobcats Triumph; No. 20 JCJC Men Fall to Coahoma

4/18/14

ELLISVILLE – The Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats opened up the 2013 portion of their schedule in impressive fashion here Tuesday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.

The Lady Bobcats took the lead for good just over three minutes into the game and cruised to an 83-59 decision over Coahoma Community College. JCJC improves to 6-4 on the season.

In the men’s game, Coahoma never led by few than 11 points in the second half and defeated No. 20 JCJC, 86-72. The Bobcats fall to 10-2.

JCJC goes on the road on Monday to Booneville where they will meet Northeast Mississippi Community College. The women’s game tips at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.

Coahoma hosts Southern-Shreveport Community College (La.) on Thursday.

The Lady Bobcats took control of the game, using an 11-0 run to break a 7-7 tie.

Khadijah Jones scored eight straight points during that stretch and gave JCJC an 18-7 lead with 12:12 left. A Precious Jefferson basket put JCJC ahead 27-11 with 9:53 showing.

The Lady Bobcats took their longest lead of the half at 41-21 with 35 seconds left when Jefferson scored to cap an 8-0 run. JCJC led 41-23 at halftime.

Coahoma could not make up any ground in the second half as JCJC avenged a 60-59 defeat on Nov. 15 in Clarksdale.

Jefferson had 20 points and nine rebounds for JCJC, while Kaylan Hughes had 17 points and 13 rebounds. Kiara Speed added 15 points, while Jones had 10 points. Chelsea Phillips had seven assists.

Bridgette Griffin led Coahoma, 1-7, with 19 points. Breanna Wiley added 18 and Jasmine Brown had 16.

JCJC was 36-of-78 from the field, including 4-of-11 from 3-point range, for 46 percent. The Lady Bobcats were only 7-of-17 from the free throw line.

Coahoma was 21-of-53 from the floor and just 1-of-5 from 3-point range for 39.6 percent. The Lady Tigers were 16-of-25 from the foul line.

JCJC outrebounded Coahoma, 41-24. The Lady Bobcats turned the ball over 24 times and forced 36 turnovers.

Tigers 86, Bobcats 72

Stacy Regular, Patrick Brown and Alex Thompson combined for 62 points as Coahoma grabbed the road victory. JCJC had beaten the Tigers 74-70 in overtime earlier this season.

Coahoma led for most the first half.

JCJC’s Donta Pittman hit a reverse layup with 1:07 left in the first half to pull the Bobcats within 45-37, but that was as close as they would get. Coahoma would lead 50-37 at halftime.

Cory Jackson’s basket with 18:33 left in the game made it 52-41, but Jones would get no closer.

The Tigers would take their longest lead of the game at 72-51 with 9:29 remaining when Norris Adams scored. The Bobcats scored seven straight points and got within 72-58 with 7:24 left when Pittman scored.

But Coahoma would take the lead back out to 80-61 with 3:21 left when Alan Morris made two free throws.

Regular had 26 points for the Tigers, now 4-5. Brown added 19 and Thompson had 17.

Pittman paced JCJC with 25 points, while Tanner Wozniak had 11 and Jackson added 10.

The Bobcats were 23-of-68 from the field, including 3-of-13 from 3-point range, for 34 percent. JCJC was 23-of-33 from the charity stripe.

Coahoma was 28-of-66 from the floor for 42 percent. However, they were 10-of-17 from 3-point range for 59 percent. The Tigers were 20-of-32 from the foul line.

JCJC outrebounded Coahoma, 38-31, but the Bobcats turned the ball over 25 times, compared to just 18 for the Tigers.
