James E. Miller Stadium Press Box Gets Upgrades
Named in honor of Coahoma Community College’s second president, James E. Miller, the stadium that is home to the Tigers’ football program is undergoing some renovations this week to its press box to make it more accessible to visiting sports teams and to accommodate special guests and CCC’s staff and administration.
Most noticeably is the addition of a new steel building adjacent to the current press box that will house a new men’s and women’s restroom facility to be used by press box guests. Each restroom will be climate controlled and afford guests of the press box access to a restroom without having to navigate the stadium stairs to the public facilities.
“This is something that we needed to provide a comfortable experience for our press box guests,” said CCC President Dr. Valmadge Towner. “At many games, we have older guests and alumni that find it difficult to climb the stadium steps. Having these new restrooms available to them, and to our visiting guests from other schools, will create a more welcoming and hospitable environment.”
In addition to the restrooms, a walkway is being constructed around the backside of the existing press box that will allow access to both the north and south entrances without having to walk through the building. There will also be a doorway cut in the rear of the President’s Box that will open up to allow access to the new walkway and a 4x6 foot landing.
Currently, the only way to navigate the press box during games is to walk directly through the press box, which disturbs coaches, radio, and television crews that are broadcasting. The new layout will allow for easier navigation and keep the integrity of the broadcast and coach’s boxes.
The upgrades are being completed by Wright Steel in Clarksdale and should be finished before Coahoma’s Homecoming game against Itawamba on Oct. 12.
