At a lunchtime ceremony Thursday afternoon, Coahoma Community College’s Career and Technical Division inducted three of its own into the National Technical Honor Society.

Cosmetology students Valkarie Linzy, Stephanie Downs and Victoria Battee now join students from more than 1500 colleges and universities throughout the United States and its territories who are affiliated with the NTHS. The society has been acknowledged as a leader in the recognition of outstanding student achievement in workforce education since 1984.

Prospective members of NTHS must maintain a 3.5 grade point average and be recommended by one of their instructors.

The ceremony was facilitated by CCC’s Skills USA team and members of Coahoma’s Board of Trustees, administration, faculty and family members were in attendance. Former Coahoma Agricultural High School principal, and lifelong educator Dr. I.D. Thomas was the ceremonies guest speaker.

“If a task is begun, stick with that task until it is done,” Thompson told the new inductees. “Be the task great or small, do it well or not it all.”

Thompson told a story of his father, although not formally educated, he became successful in life by living by those words and doing the very best that he could with any job he was tasked with. Thompson told the students that if they too adopted that train of thought, they would too become successful.

Board of Trustees Vice Chairman the Rev. Dennis Hawkins also shared some words with the students that even after they leave Coahoma, their college family will be their to support them and help them in any way they can.

“You may leave us, but you will take a part of us with you throughout your life,” Hawkins said. “We are very proud of you.”
