Business Department Chair Deborah Carter and her instructors believe an education is a well-rounded experience that goes beyond the classroom, and since 1999, Coahoma Community College’s Business & Computer Information Systems Department and its students have learned the value of being community-oriented during their annual food drive. The faculty and students will begin Monday, October 7th, collecting non-perishable food items to donate to The Care Station and the St. James Mission.

The annual event is aimed ultimately at benefitting those that need help feeding their families during the Holiday season, but it serves two-fold as an eye-opening experience for students who participate in the business department’s Computer Science, Accounting Society and Enactus clubs.

“As a member of this community, I know that there is hunger everywhere, and for those students that may not know the truth behind this, we can help show them it’s a lot closer than they think,” said Carter. “A lot of them find it surprising, Clarksdale’s a small community but there is hunger here and we want to be part of the effort of working together to stop it.”

The event is mandatory for the students as part of a service-learning initiative associated with the extracurricular clubs. About 40 students will be looking for your help beginning next week as they push awareness for local hunger and become involved in its remedy.

“It’s something that I did while I was in college, and it opened my eyes to the problem, and along with my sorority (Iota Delta omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.) we still continue to help every year,” said Carter. “We want to prepare our students academically, but we also want to teach them to be well-rounded members of their communities.”

Anyone in the community who wishes to help in the effort by donating non-perishable items to the food drive can bring them to Curry Hall, or can contact the office of Public Relations at (662) 621-4157 to facilitate a pickup of items.

Coahoma Community College’s Business Department offers 11 majors and sponsors numerous community events including the food drive, and spring business workshops for the general public that teach the development of business plans, how to start and maintain a small business, and a workshop on business ethics. The department also sponsors a business plan development competition between the local high schools.
