Lyon Elementary Bobcats Upset Tigers in Front of Home Crowd
It was a day that will live in infamy.
A proud Coahoma Community College basketball program took one on the chin Friday afternoon on the cusp of their season opener Monday night at East Central Mississippi. What should’ve been a cake walk for the mighty Tigers against the undersized and under matched Bobcats of Lyon Elementary School turned into a nightmare as first the ladies, and the men, were exposed to the “Shock-and-Awe” juggernaut the was the Lyon offense.
It was a sore sight to watch as the Bobcats took control of almost every aspect of the game, running the floor with little resistance, scoring points in transition and completely taking the Tigers out of their offensive and defensive schemes.
Lady Tigers Head Basketball Coach LaCole Brooks was stunned, and visibly distraught.
“I’m shocked and I’m overwhelmed with emotion right now,” said Brooks. “This was the biggest upset in the history of upsets, bigger than Mohammed Ali and Sonny Liston, Lyon Elementary shocked the world today. I underestimated them, and there’s no doubt that this was the toughest defense that we will face all season long.
“I’m just real emotional right now, excuse me … I need to go and call my momma.”
And things didn’t get any better for the men’s basketball team, despite some early intimidation methods displayed by the Tigers. As the two teams met as midcourt before the start of the game, the CCC basketball players tried to kidnap one of the Bobcat starters. By Lyon quickly showed Coahoma the true meaning of team, as they stormed into the Tiger huddle and retrieved their teammate.
As if they needed any more motivation, the attempted kidnapping poured even more fuel on the mighty Bobcats fire as they stormed out the gate scoring the games first four points. Lyon would never look back, keeping the gas pedal on the floor and literally punishing the Tigers for the pregame insult.
When all the dust had settled, the Bobcats stood celebrating a double-digit victory over their elders.
“We want a rematch,” shouted Tigers Head Coach Ira Peterson with a stunned grimace of agony stretched across his face. “This is an outrage, the referees weren’t calling anything, those guys were brutalizing us out there. This was a travesty of justice.”
Throughout the contest, both the Lady Bobcats and the Bobcats stood poised and determined and embraced their, “David vs. Goliath” role. They took out a rock a slung it straight between the eyes of their college adversaries – and came away victorious.
More than 150 photos were taken of this massacre and can be found at the below link. But we warn you; they are tough to view, especially if you’re a Tiger fan!
