CLARKSDALE — Members of the Clarksdale-Marks Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., presented Coahoma Community College President Dr. Valmadge Towner with a check for $15,000 recently. The money, generated with the help of legislation passed in 2002 by the State of Mississippi, allowed the organization to have distinctive automobile license plates available for purchase.

The sorority formed a “tag committee” consisting of chapter presidents from the northern and southern parts of the state that decided that the funds raised through the sale of the license plates would be donated to the five Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) throughout Mississippi.

Several “Deltas” work on the campus of Coahoma Community College, and spokesman Yvnonne Stanford said that they are proud for their automobiles to bear the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., tags and they are even prouder to be a part of the, “Driving Force Behind Education”.

“The Deltas have demonstrated the original mindset and origination of sororities and fraternities, the idea of giving back,” said Towner. “This philanthropic gesture of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is appreciated and needed immensely. Our students have vast financial needs and this monetary gift will aid many of them in continuing their education here at CCC.”
