Tigers Secure Playoff Spot with Win Over MS Delta
Cameron Monix, shoots for three!
MOORHEAD — The Coahoma Community College men’s basketball team secured a berth in the MACJC Playoffs with a nail-biting win on the road at Mississippi Delta, 72-69.
The Tigers trailed by a single point with 0:46 seconds left in the second half. Sophomore Darcee Carson took control driving the lane and dropping a runner to put CCC up by a single point. MS Delta called a timeout and had possession of the ball with a chance to score the go-ahead basket, but Carson intercepted the inbounds pass and was fouled with just 9.7 seconds remaining.
Not yet in the bonus, Coahoma inbounded the ball to Billy Jackson who was fouled and sent to the line. Jackson hit both of his free throws to extend the lead to three, and the Trojans come up empty on a last second 3-point attempt and a put back to end the game.
Jackson finished the game with 24 points to lead the Tigers, with Robert Jordan having a big night off the bench scoring 15 points and Carson adding 11. CCC improved to 6-4 in the MACJC North Division, and with two games left in the regular season, secured a playoff berth according to Head Coach Ira Peterson.
“I am very proud of this team … at the beginning of the season we really didn’t know each other, we were a young basketball team and now we’re finally gelling,” Peterson said. “We came back from a (big deficit) but these kids never quit. That’s one thing that you’re going to get from our team, they’re going fight and they’re going to play hard.
“Sometimes things don’t look the prettiest, but once we get things going in our favor, we start to play Coahoma basketball and we finish the game strong — I am proud of these guys.”
The Trojans jumped all over the Tigers early announcing their presence with two big alley-oop dunks to start the half and another to close out the first half. MS Delta led by as many as eight points (at the 10:00 mark of the first half) and trailed by six (34-28) at intermission. But they kept chipping away taking their first lead with 6:25 left in the second half.
“We’ve got a big picture right now, we’re playing for something,” said Peterson. “We’re trying to get better every game, and (we have been) and it’s a credit to our coaching staff and to these kids. Again, I’m just really proud of them.”
The Lady Tigers dropped their opening contest with the Lady Trojans Monday evening, 77-63.
CCC’s Ariel Jones turned in a double-double performance in the losing effort scoring 18 points, pulling down 17 rebounds. Jones was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line and hit 7-of-14 shots from the field. Gabrielle Gilbert also tallied double-digits in the scoring column netting 14 points for the Lady Tigers in the losing effort.
Coahoma will play host to Northeast Community College on Thursday evening at the Pinnacle on “Sophomore Night” where the college will be honoring those who will be suiting up in a Tigers uniform in front of the home crowd for the final time.
The Coahoma Athletic Department will also be sponsoring a "PINK OUT" where the first 75 fans will receive a free pink CCC T-shirt and all CCC students will be given pink ribbons in support of cancer awareness. Tip-off for the women’s game is scheduled for 5 p.m. with the men to follow at 7 p.m.
