ACT Prep Class Rescheduled for March 29th
CLARKSDALE — Coahoma Community College has rescheduled its ACT preparedness class after inclement weather forced postponement in early December.
The class will be held March 29 from 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Coahoma Community College. The class is sponsored by the CCC Career Services and Placement Center and is the second time this year students can prep for the test.
“They actually get to take a mock ACT test and it’s timed so they do get to experience that and we help them get over nervousness,” said Christopher Dixon, manager of the CCC Career Services and Placement Center. The center collected statistical data from the areas the center services, including Bolivar, Coahoma, Quitman, Tallahatchie and Tunica counties. The data shows that all of those counties scored below the national average on ACT tests, contributing to Mississippi’s rank of 49 out of 50 in national ACT placement.
The national average ACT score is 20.9, while the average score in Mississippi is 18.9.
“To help our students prepare for their future, we are elated to have the funds to offer “The ACT Workshop” which will be offered free of charge,” Dixon wrote.
Although ACT preparation is usually considered for juniors and seniors in high school, Dixon said in the past, the class has been open to junior high students who just want to take the practice test and see how they do. This year, the workshop is open to middle school students, as well.
“We’re thinking you can’t prepare early enough,” said Dixon. “We help them get over test anxiety, [and] help them answer questions about retesting.”
Dixon said that many students report a two- to three-point improvement in their ACT scores the second time they take it. The class will prepare students in math, science, reading and English. Dixon said the class generally hosts about 50 students each semester.
The class is free and snacks and refreshments will be provided. It will be held in the Zee A. Barron Student Union Building on the CCC campus.
