Nakitha Lindsey

After years out of the classroom, Nakitha Lindsey has become the first individual to graduate from the Complete 2 Compete program at Coahoma Community College; receiving her Associate of Arts degree.

Complete 2 Compete (C2C) is a statewide initiative designed to help Mississippi adults who have earned college credit – but do not have a degree and want to better their lives by completing a degree program. Created by the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning and the Mississippi Community College Board, the C2C program combines the resources of Mississippi’s 15 community colleges and eight public universities.

A Leland, Mississippi native, Lindsey started her educational journey at Mississippi Delta Community College. She attended for about a year – but found it wasn’t the right fit for her. Lindsey soon enrolled at Coahoma Community College in 2001. During this transitional period, she gave birth to a son. At this point, she decided to leave her education behind to focus on providing for her child.

Lindsey couldn’t shake the feeling of wanting to accomplish more, so she enrolled at Mississippi Valley State University in 2006. She still wanted to pursue her academic dreams and pushed forward. A family emergency would change the course of her journey yet again.

“My sister became ill and needed me,” said Lindsey. “I packed my bags and moved to Texas. I also wanted a better chance for my son. Texas has better educational systems for children. I had to think of his future as well. It was a hard decision, but my family means the world to me.”

Years passed, and Lindsey had moved on with her life, but her determination to pursue her education never left.

“I received an email and something in the mail about a program that helps individuals that have college credit, but no degree,” said Lindsey. “This was the information I needed. Education has always been important to me, and I wanted to show my son that anything is possible. That’s why I enrolled.”

C2C makes it easy for adults to review prior credits earned and matches them with an institution that provides the best pathway for obtaining a degree. The program links adults to a C2C Coach, who works to maximize the application of earned credits toward a degree. For adults who have enough credits for an associate or bachelor’s degree, that degree is awarded. For those just short of a degree, a C2C Coach works to identify the best pathway that meets their goals.

Jeremy Pittman, C2C coach, knows that the program is giving hope to individuals that thought attaining a degree was impossible.

“The C2C program at Coahoma is dedicated to helping students move past some of their financial and academic challenges.  Our coaches have a deep knowledge of the institution and can help students on their path to success," said Pittman. “Students are the lifeline of the college. Since being here, I recognize many students were like me - they just need a good, consistent, and firm push to help them achieve success.  This program provides an opportunity for students to get a second chance, even after life's ups and downs. That’s what Nakitha saw in the program, and that’s why she has her degree.”

Lindsey expressed that Coahoma’s staff has been a joy to work with and that anyone who thinks its too late to pursue a degree should reconsider.

“I encourage anyone to keep going. It's never too late. Especially, for something like college,” said Lindsey. “I’ve just applied to Jackson State University for online courses. I’m trying to get my bachelor's and master’s degrees. I’m not going to give up on my dreams! I want to show my son that hard work and dedication does pay off.”

The C2C program at Coahoma currently has 12 students enrolled, with nine students set to complete the program’s requirements this semester. Upon completion, they will earn an Associate of Arts Degree.
